ESTP Publication Award 2007 |
The ESTP Award 2007 including 1,000 EUR* is given to
Dr. Elodie Drevon-Gaillot
Dr. Elodie Drevon-Gaillot is awarded the ESTP stipend of 1000 in recognition of the excellence of her publication entitled "A review of background findings in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) from three different origins" (1).
In her review, Dr. Drevon-Gaillot assesses variations in background observations in cynomolgus macaques originating from three breeding centers located in Mauritius, the Philippines and Vietnam. Histopathological and clinical pathology data from 90 cynomolgus monkeys are included. Dr. Drevon-Gaillot documents the alterations observed in the major organ systems (digestive system, kidneys, heart, liver, spleen, lungs and lymph nodes) by using routine histology and special stains when deemed necessary. The results are well described and documented with appropriate photography. Finally, the relevance and the differences in findings among the three breeds are addressed and discussed.
Background data or exact knowledge of the spontaneous frequency of certain pathological changes in a particular species and strain is essential for the evaluation of preclinical studies. Given the rather low number of monkeys per group in toxicity studies the publication of Dr. Drevon-Gaillot is a valuable contribution to the daily work of toxicological pathologists. It helps to distinguish between treatment-related effects and spontaneous alterations or exacerbations of background lesions.
